Frequently asked questions
Short answers about the app, the free tier, exports and your data
Getting started
- Is Project Timeline free?
- Yes. The chart editor is free with no sign-up and no trial period — the free tier is a working tool, not a demo. It holds 4 chart rows, 3 resources, 2 saved projects, the first 10 tasks in the data table and 3 saved versions per project, and every chart carries a small project-timeline.com mark. Pro raises those limits.
- Do I need an account?
- Not to plan. Without one, your work is saved in your browser on that device and never leaves it. An account adds cloud save, version history, sharing and Timeline AI — signed in, the free tier gets 2 AI requests a day.
- What is a Gantt chart?
- A chart that lays tasks out as bars along a calendar, so you can see what runs when and what waits on what. Project Timeline draws one, and also a consolidated view that packs several items onto each row when you want the whole plan on a single screen.
- Does it work on a phone?
- Yes. Add it to your home screen from your browser and it opens like any other app — same project, same account, laid out for a small screen, and turning the phone sideways gives you the full chart. The mobile layout is still in Beta and needs a connection; there is no offline mode yet.
Building the plan
- How do I link two tasks?
- Drag from the edge of one bar onto another. Dates then cascade: move the first task and everything downstream moves with it, unless you switch off start-date dependence in Options.
- Does it work out the critical path?
- Yes, and it re-draws as you edit. The critical path is the chain where a day lost is a day lost on the finish date. Only finish-to-start links are supported — there is no start-to-start or finish-to-finish.
- Does it skip weekends and public holidays?
- Yes. Scheduling is working-day aware: weekends, public holidays for 14 countries, your own non-working days and each person's days off are all skipped when tasks move.
- Can it track cost?
- Give a resource a day rate and the chart totals cost per task, per person and per project. Turn it on with Show costs in Options, where you also pick the currency.
Exporting and sharing
- Can I put the chart in PowerPoint?
- Yes. Export SVG and paste it onto a slide as vector, so it stays sharp however far it is projected. Exporting PNG also copies the chart to your clipboard, so it pastes straight onto a slide without touching a file.
- What can I export?
- SVG, PNG, and a true vector PDF with clickable links — plus CSV for the task table and full-project JSON for backup or for moving the plan somewhere else.
- How do I show a plan to someone without an account?
- Create a public link. Anyone who has it can view the plan, read-only, without signing in and whether or not they have Pro. The link is not listed anywhere, and you can turn it off at any time.
- Who can edit a project I share?
- Invite someone by email and you are both on the same plan with the same history, with no exported files going back and forth. On the free tier a shared project is view-only for them; a Pro plan of their own lets them edit it too.
Pro and billing
- What does Pro cost?
- €3.99/month or €34.99/year — about 27% less than paying monthly. Both start with a 14-day free trial, and you can cancel before it ends without being charged.
- What does Pro add?
- 20 chart rows, 50 resources, 50 projects, 100 table rows, 15 saved versions and 50 AI requests a day, with no watermark. It also unlocks baselines, saved templates, work calendars, colour palettes, a company resource list, project sharing, and the shared resource chart that shows who is booked across every project on your account.
- What happens if I cancel?
- Nothing is deleted. Your projects stay exactly as they are and everything you saved — templates, calendars, palettes, company resources — stays readable. You simply cannot add new ones until you upgrade again.
Your data
- Where is my data stored?
- Without an account, only in your browser on that device. Signed in, projects sync to your account, private by default and protected at the database level. You can export everything as JSON or CSV, or delete your account and all of its data, at any time.
- What is Timeline AI, and does it see my plan?
- It edits the plan from a description — “shift everything after PCB Layout by two weeks”. To do that, the plan you have open is sent to the AI provider through our server, never from your browser. Every edit it makes is one undo away.
- Can I import from Microsoft Project or GanttProject?
- There is no .mpp import. Export your tasks from Project as CSV and import that file here — names, dates and durations come across, and you redraw the dependencies. GanttProject imports are coming soon.
